Video Summary
The webinar, led by Melissa Perry and Kami Norland, focused on helping critical access hospitals become “grant-ready” for behavioral health funding. Melissa introduced the session, which covered why grant funding matters, an Iowa hospital grant resource guide, a grant application decision worksheet, and organizational strategies.

Kami explained that rural and critical access hospitals are financially vulnerable and often face growing behavioral health needs, including anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. She emphasized that many hospitals waste time chasing grants that don’t align with their mission or capacity because they lack dedicated grant infrastructure, clear roles, or efficient internal communication. To address this, she recommended building grant capacity through early partnerships, strong alignment with strategic goals, and reusable grant templates.

Melissa highlighted grant-finding resources such as Grants.gov, the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, state rural health offices, and especially the Rural Health Information Hub, which allows users to search by funding topic, geography, and other filters. She also presented an Iowa hospital grant resource guide and a grant application decision worksheet adapted from state health department materials.

Kami walked through practical tools for success: rapid response grant files, approved organizational language, impact stories, logic models, budget templates, community partnership letters, clear staff roles, and a process for collecting needs statements and evaluation data. She stressed that strong grants show urgency, clear partnerships, realistic implementation plans, and sustainability. The session closed with advice to reduce chaos, standardize processes, and use templates so hospitals can respond quickly and strategically to aligned funding opportunities.
